This 1 day course is aimed at individuals involved in the care profession who are required to carry out activities which involve the moving and handling of people. The initial part of the course involves learning manual handling principles. The second part of the course involves learning and practicing safer patient handling techniques specific to people.

The training includes:

• An overview of current legislation relevant to manual handling
• Back anatomy and its function
• Causes of injury
• Prevention of injury
• Ergonomics and Risk Assessment
• Safer Moving and Handling techniques

Practical sessions including the use of:

• Assisting clients to stand and sit
• Sticks & Zimmer frames
• Bed to chair
• Chair to bed
• Controlling a falling client
• Slide Sheets
• Moving clients in bed
• Hoist & Standaid
• Verbal instructions

N.B. This course is only available in-house and relevant handling aids must be available for practical sessions to take place.

This course contributes to the underpinning knowledge for the following NVQ competence but may not necessarily cover the entire range statements.
